Cooling the Nervous System/Calming the Emotions

Pranayama, the ancient yogic science of controlling the life force, offers us ways to directly manage the body's physical, mental, and emotional processes.


Chandra Bheda Pranayama I - Lunar Breath


How to Do It

Sit tall and begin breathing diaphragmatically. Close off the right nostril and inhale through the left nostril evenly over 8 counts.

Close both nostrils and hold the breath for 8 counts.

Open the right nostril/keep left nostril closed and exhale evenly over 8 counts.

At the end of the exhalation, begin the cycle over again by inhaling through the left nostril over 8 counts.

Continue for about 6 cycles.


Adjust the count as needed to suit your own breath; let it be comfortable and not a strain.

Increases inner spiritual awareness


Cautions

Keep the length of the inhalation, exhalation and holding of the breath within a comfortable range. Be especially careful of this if there are cardiovascular issues or pregnancy.
